Q: What is included in the Roll Up Side Bundle?

A: The bundle includes the core components needed for a roll up side setup, including rope hooks, eye bolts, UV stabilized curtain rope, fabric clips, and either manual gear cranks or automatic roll up side motors with guide pipes. Solarside woven fabric and 1.315” roll-up pipe are optional add ons. Exact component sizing may vary based on the selected bundle size.

Q: Is this a manual or motorized roll up side system?

A: Both options are available. Choose a manual roll up side configuration with gear cranks or a motorized configuration with automatic roll up side motors.

Q: Does the motorized option include a controller?

A: No. The motorized option includes a motor for each side, but the controller is sold separately. A compatible controller is needed if you want automated operation based on temperature or environmental settings. Please contact us for more information or see our Automation page.

Q: If I don’t add woven fabric, what will the roll ups be made from?
A: Roll up sides are traditionally constructed from the lower section of a greenhouse or high tunnel’s top plastic. In a standard configuration, the plastic will come down from the peak over a “hip board,” at about chest or shoulder height, and then down to a baseboard at the ground. The section of plastic between the hip board and the baseboard is what gets rolled up and down. 

Q: What is the benefit of adding woven fabric? 
A: Although it adds some cost up front, the woven fabric is more durable then standard 6 mil greenhouse film and drastically reduces long-term maintenance costs. If you don’t already have your top plastic on hand, adding woven fabric would mean you do not need as large a piece for the top (as it only needs to stretch from hip board to hip board, instead of from the ground on one side to the other). This makes the top plastic cheaper and easier to handle. The biggest benefit we see comes when the top plastic needs to be replaced (which is recommended every four years). Recovering a tunnel with fabric roll ups in place can take 1-2 hours, while it can be an all day project if the roll up sides need to be taken apart and rebuilt every time. 

Q: If I don’t add roll up pipe, what do I need to source locally? 
A: The fabric clips, roll cranks, and motors included in the Roll Up Side kit are sized to fit on 1.315” galvanized steel tubing. This is also commonly referred to as 1⅜” tubing, and is a standard size in the greenhouse industry. We use this same size tubing for our purlins and trusses. Purchasing a kit here without the pipe makes it easy for us to ship, but you will need to source enough 1.315” tubing to run the length of your greenhouse on both sides. 

Q: Why does adding the 1.315" roll up pipe require a custom shipping quote?
A: We stock 1.315" roll up pipe in 16’ and 20’ lengths, which requires a custom freight quote to deliver. This tubing can also be picked up from our location in Connecticut. If you need pipe along with the other supplies, contact us for a custom quote and we’ll be happy to help!

Q: Can roll up sides be added to an existing greenhouse or high tunnel?

A: Yes. Roll up sides can often be added to existing greenhouse, high tunnel, and hoop house structures. Compatibility depends on the structure design, length, sidewall setup, and existing covering system. Contact us if you need help determining what will work for you.

Q: What sizes are available?

A: We can put a kit together for any length tunnel, but the most common sizes (48', 72', 96', and 148') are listed for easy purchase here.  If your greenhouse or high tunnel requires a different length, contact us for custom sizing options.

Q: Are roll up sides good for greenhouse ventilation?

A: Yes. Roll up sides are a popular greenhouse and high tunnel ventilation option because they allow fresh air to enter through the sidewalls, help release heat and humidity, and support natural airflow through the structure.

Q: Can I install this myself?

A: Many experienced DIY builders can install roll up sides themselves, but customers may also choose to hire a greenhouse builder or contractor. Installation instructions are available by request to help support the installation process.

Q: Can I buy individual roll up side parts instead of the full bundle?

A: Yes. This bundle is designed for customers who want everything needed in one package, but individual roll up side components may also be purchased separately if you already have some of the required parts.
